What is nosebleed?

Nosebleed is the occurrence of haemorrhage from nose and is generally noticed when blood drains out from the nostrils. Nosebleed is also known as nasal haemorrhage and is medically termed as epistaxis. The term epistaxis is derived from the Greek word epistazo which means to bleed from nose. In severe cases blood may come up the duct and then come out from eye. Blood can also flow down to the stomach and result in vomiting and nausea. Epistaxis are rarely a reason to panic but in some cases it can be a threat to life. Spontaneous nosebleed is common especially in children. When the mucous membrane present inside the nose dries out or cracks, it is likely to bleed. Epistaxis are common in people who takes anti coagulants and also in older people.

Nosebleed causes

Dryness: There are various causes of epistaxis. Dry air is a major cause of epistaxis. Living in dry climate dries out the nasal membrane. Also exposed to central heating system can lead to dryness. This dryness results in crusting inside the nose. This crusting becomes irritated and if scratched, the nose may bleed. Allergies, sinuous problems or colds may also dry out the nasal membrane which again leads to nosebleed.

Blowing nose: Frequent blowing of nose is another major reason of epistaxis.

Picking of inside part of nose: If one picks inside the nose which is already irritated and the nails of the finger are long, there is a chance for the nose to bleed.

Deviated septum: In some cases the wall which separates two nostrils is deviated or off centered. This can be a reason for epistaxis.

Use of illegal drugs: Extensive use of illegal drugs such as opium, cocaine etc may also result in nosebleed.

Liver disease: Some liver diseases can interfere with the blood clotting and then result in epistaxis.

Deficiency: Deficiency of useful components such as calcium may lead to nosebleed.

Expose to chemicals: Those who are working in chemical industries are even chemistry research labs have to be exposed to chemicals for long period of time. Proper precaution is to be undergone otherwise there may be chance of nosebleed.

Medical disorder: Blood clotting disorder, high blood pressure, cancer and other medical disorder may cause nosebleed.

Nosebleed symptoms

Some of the symptoms of nosebleed are dizziness, fainting, uneasiness, vomiting and extensive loss of blood.

Homemade remedies to immediately stop nosebleed

  1. Take 3 gram suhaga (Borax) and mix some water in it and apply this mixture over nose holes. It will stop nosebleed immediately.
  2. Applying cold water on head stops nosebleed immediately. Also wash your hands and legs with clod water.
  3. Put some lemon juice drops in your nostrils can immediately stop nosebleed.
  4. Soak some Raisins in water for whole night. Eat these Raisins next morning. Follow this process fof few days and it will stops epistaxis forever.
  5. Take 10 gms multani mitti and soak it in a clay pot for whole night in 500 ml water. Next morning filter this water using a clean cotton cloth and drink it. It will give you 100% relief in nosebleed problem whether this is new or old. This multani mitti water is the best natural home remedy for nosebleed. You can also apply remaining multani on the head and nose.
  6. Apply 2 3 drops of lemon juice inside nose holes.
  7. Soak few raisins ay night in water and next day chew all raisins. Following this process for few days will give you sure relief in nosebleed.
  8. Ice: Putting ice is a good agent to reduce bleeding, inflammation as well as constricting the blood vessels.
  9. Green vegetables: Dark green leafy vegetables which are high in vitamin K content is very much essential for proper blood clotting.
  10. Orange: Orange or orange juice are rich in vitamin C content creates a moist lining inside the nose. High intake of orange or orange juice keeps the blood vessels healthy and thus prevents nosebleeds.
  11. Moisturizer: Putting a light coating of moisturizer or antiseptic nasal cream inside the nose will put some relief during nosebleed.
  12. Steam: Steam bathing can also reduce nosebleed. Place a towel over the head and lean forward over the steam and breathe gently. Steam bath is recommended twice a day and is a good remedy for nosebleed.
