Causes and types of Tonsillitis

Although tonsillitis is more common among children, it can affect any individual, who is living or working in an unhealthy atmosphere. There are many means by which germs make a way to your throat and infect the tonsils. There are, generally, two main causes to tonsillitis: viral and bacterial.

Different viruses such as cold virus, Epstein-Barr virus and cold virus are capable of causing tonsillitis to an individual. However, the most common culprit is the cold virus when it comes to viral tonsillitis.

The bacterial form of tonsillitis is commonly caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, a bacterium that is known to cause strep throat. This bacterial tonsillitis is highly contagious and can lead to many complications if not treated on time.

Keep in mind that both forms of tonsillitis are contagious to different people. While tonsillitis due to Strep throat is highly contagious and can affect anyone, the viral infection can spread on to a person, who is in contact with the virus for the first time.

Hence, always remember to take steps required to prevent the spreading of tonsillitis to other unaffected individuals.
